A twist on your regular pizza – meatball marinara pizza pot pie! Gooey goodness, no pizza cutter required, and easily customized with your favorite ingredients.
Last Sunday I was in Orlando attending the PMA Fresh Summit and got a chance to see what’s new in the food industry. I’m always excited to see fresh produce and try new things. It always amazes me to see all of the fun new items that have been added. I felt like a kid in a candy store!
Unfortunately it was too short of a trip. I had to catch a red eye flight on the way back, so I slept all the way home. When I got home, I didn’t feel like cooking at all! I knew I needed something simple where I could just throw all the ingredients in one pot and call it a meal. If you feel that way today, I’m here to help you! This Pizza Pot Pie sounds like a regular pizza; however it’s actually extraordinary! Let me tell you why…
First it has meatball marinara sauce. I’ve never been a red sauce girl. I know, I know…pretty crazy. BUT let me just tell you, this recipe changed my tastebuds! I’m all about marinara now. It’s full of flavor and goes perfectly in this recipe!
Secondly, it has cheeseeee that makes this pizza so ooey gooey cheesy-licious. Look at this…
And third, who doesn’t love a pizza pot pie?! It’s two of the best things wrapped up into one! Pizza and pot pie. I love this pizza because I can prep it ahead of time and just need to cover it with aluminum foil when it is at room temperature. You then put it in the fridge overnight and reheat it in the oven when you’re ready to eat. I even bring it to lunch at work! (And yes, if you’re wondering, I tend to make everyone jealous at work *wink*)
Meatball Marinara Pizza Pot Pie
Ingredients
- 1 small onion
- 3 tbs minced garlic
- 1 20oz package frozen meatballs
- 1 24 oz. garlic basil pasta sauce
- 1 tbs finely-chopped fresh basil
- 1 tbs finely chopped flat-leaf parsley
- Pinch of dried oregano
- Salt and ground black pepper
- 8 oz. Mexican 4-cheese
- 8 oz. mozzarella cheese
- 5 tbs vegetable oil
- 1 tbs melted butter
- 1 lb pizza dough store-bought
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400F.
- Add 3 tbs vegetable oil to a skillet. Add the meatballs and fry until undersides are brown and slightly crisp. Turn and brown the other sides. Set aside.
- Heat 2 tbs oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Add onion and garlic; and saute until translucent, about 4 minutes. Add pasta sauce, basil, parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Add the meatballs back to the saucepan and gently to coat them in sauce. Let the meatballs simmer in the sauce for 10-15 minutes.
- To assemble: spray the pie plate/bakeware with no-stick cooking spray. Add a layer of Mexican cheese and another layer of mozzarella cheese. Add pasta sauce and meatballs, then cover with pizza dough.
- Brush the top with melted butter. Bake for 20-25 minutes.

I keep seeing that FB video of whatever restaurant it is – they make a massively cheesy and delicious looking pizza pot pie. I like your version better because it looks manageable and ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! And pizza is arguably my favorite food of all time…so I will definitely be keeping this recipe for later use 🙂

Lauren @ Sew You Think You Can Cook says
My favorite pizza place in Chicago actually makes pizza pot pies instead of classic pizza (well they make classic pizza, too, but I’ve never seen anyone order it!). They flip their pies and present it to you in the form of a pizza. Your version is much easier and better for at home cooking. Can’t wait to try it!
Holly Bird says
I can not wait to try this!!! I love pizza and pies! LOL Thank you for sharing!!
Ellen says
This looks so yummy! Pizza pot pie? Count me in!
Bonnie Simmons says
Loved it. I added cut up pepperoni and cut up jumbo black olives. Always have them on pizza I order. I decreased the amount of the cheese. I used pie crust instead of pizza dough. Will make it again sometime.
