Creamy hot chocolate, fortified with chocolate stout beer. This beer hot chocolate is an adult version of a classic winter warmer. It’s super chocolatey, rich, and satisfying especially with a scoop of ice cream in it.
Chocolate and stout go together like pho and sriracha. And this recipe can’t be any better. Stout hot chocolate. It’s super chocolatey, rich, and satisfying. And even better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
It all started years ago when I was in Belgium and it happened to be a Belgian beer and chocolate festival where I decided to partake in the tasting. And it was one of the most memorable events with overflowing beer and endless chocolates around! So good that I fell in love with it right away.
Unlike Mexican hot chocolate where it contains Madagascar vanilla beans, cinnamon, nutmeg, and chili peppers; this beer hot chocolate only has a combination of stout beer and hot chocolate; hence, it’s rich and makes a delicious cold-weather treat!
The ingredients
- Chocolate stout beer will give a great depth of flavor
- Milk. I recommend using whole milk to make this drink rich
- Dark chocolate for super chocolatey texture
- Sugar to add sweetness here
- Ice cream. Vanilla ice cream makes the best addition here
- Optional: cocoa powder
How to make chocolate beer
- In a saucepan, bring the stout to a simmer (and not bubble over) over medium-high heat, about 10 minutes or until it is reduced to about 3/4 of a cup. Remove from the heat and set aside
- In a separate saucepan, warm the milk over medium heat and not bring it to a boil. Add in chocolate and sugar and stir until all the chocolate is melted. Remove from the heat and mix with the reduced beer
- Divide the ice cream between 2 mugs and pour the stout beer hot chocolate over
Variation
Hot chocolate is a comforting drink; hence, here are some options you can add to your adult hot chocolate version.
- Marshmallows. Store-bought or homemade always works well with chocolate
- Whipped cream. And probably a mountful of it if you like something sweet
- Chocolate shavings because they’re fun!
The winter and holiday season has everyone making some hot chocolate to warm up. And this beer hot chocolate is a unique way to combine two favorites.
