Years later, I still think about this tiny island in Gorontalo.

The Island That Taught Me How to Slow Down
Every now and then, I find myself scrolling through old travel photos. Most of them make me smile for a second. A few leave me wondering where all those years went. Then there are the photos from Pulo Cinta. Those always make me stop. Not because they’re the prettiest photos I’ve ever taken, but because I remember exactly how I felt standing there.
Completely unhurried. Completely disconnected. Completely at peace.
When my husband and I booked a few nights at Pulo Cinta, I wasn’t looking for luxury, and I certainly wasn’t chasing the next Instagram-worthy destination. Honestly, I was just curious.
A tiny eco-resort on a remote island in Gorontalo? That sounded exactly like the kind of adventure we’d enjoy.

Getting There Was Part of the Adventure
Part of Pulo Cinta’s charm is that you have to work just a little to get there. After flying into Gorontalo, we spent about an hour and a half driving before climbing into a small boat for the final stretch across the water.
As the boat moved farther from the mainland, the scenery slowly changed. The shoreline disappeared behind us, the water became impossibly clear, and before long we could see a handful of overwater bungalows sitting quietly in the middle of the sea.
I remember looking at them and thinking,
“We’re really staying here?”
Sometimes the journey is just transportation. This time, it felt like the beginning of the experience.

The First Thing We Did
Nothing.
At least, nothing that would look impressive on an itinerary.
We checked into our bungalow, walked onto the deck, sat down, and stayed there for a while. There was no sightseeing checklist waiting for us. No pressure to make the most of every minute. Just the gentle sound of the water moving beneath our feet and the occasional breeze drifting through the room.
A little while later, someone brought us fresh coconuts and a few snacks. I honestly don’t remember what we talked about. I just remember never feeling the need to be anywhere else.

Redefining Luxury
One of the things I remember most is how simple everything was. There wasn’t any air conditioning, but I never missed it. The sea breeze was more than enough.
Meals weren’t elaborate either. Fresh seafood, local ingredients, and dishes that somehow tasted even better because they were enjoyed with nothing but the ocean in front of us. That trip quietly changed the way I think about luxury. It’s easy to associate luxury with extravagant hotels, marble bathrooms, or infinity pools overlooking the sea.
But sometimes luxury is much simpler than that.
Sometimes it’s waking up with nowhere to be.
Sometimes it’s eating freshly grilled fish while watching the water change from turquoise to deep blue.
Sometimes it’s realizing you’ve completely stopped checking the time.

Under the Surface
Of course, we didn’t spend the entire trip sitting on the deck.
The water was simply too beautiful to ignore.
Over the years, I’ve snorkeled in Hawaii, Mexico, and Bora Bora. Every destination had something special, but somehow the reefs around Pulo Cinta are still the ones I think about most often.
The visibility was incredible. Schools of colorful fish swam around us, coral stretched farther than we could see, and then there was the bright blue starfish.
I remember staring at it far longer than I probably should have.
Part of me wished I could take it home.
Of course, some things are beautiful precisely because they stay where they belong.

Looking Back
Travel has a funny way of changing with us.
Some destinations become more popular. Others quietly fade from the spotlight. Resorts are renovated, ownership changes, and sometimes places become almost unrecognizable from the version you remember.
I honestly don’t know if Pulo Cinta today feels anything like the one we visited all those years ago.
And that’s okay.
When I think about this trip, I’m not trying to recreate it.
I’m simply grateful we experienced it when we did.
Maybe that’s the real gift of travel.
You don’t just collect places.
You collect moments that can never quite be repeated.

A Little Catch-Up Before You Go
People sometimes ask me about my favorite trip, and it’s never an easy question to answer.
There are so many places I loved for different reasons.
But somehow, Pulo Cinta always finds its way into the conversation.
Not because we filled every day with exciting activities.
Not because it was the most luxurious resort we’ve ever visited.
But because, for a few quiet days on a tiny island in Gorontalo, life slowed down in a way I didn’t even realize I needed.
Looking back, I can’t tell you every meal we ate or every conversation we had.
What I do remember is how peaceful it felt to wake up with the ocean outside our door, spend hours doing almost nothing, and never once feel guilty about it.
Travel often teaches us about the places we visit.
This little island taught me something about myself.
Sometimes, slowing down isn’t wasting time.
Sometimes, it’s exactly what you’ve been missing all along.
Thanks for catching up with me.

If You’re Planning to Visit Today…
It’s been several years since we visited Pulo Cinta, and like any destination, things may have changed over time. If you’re thinking about planning a trip, I’d recommend checking recent reviews, transportation options, and the resort’s latest information before you book.
Even if the island has evolved since our visit, I’ll always be grateful for the version we experienced.
