A cheese board is my favorite item to enjoy. In fact, I always end my day with a mini tray of cheese to enjoy. It’s my comfort food. And I also shared an Indonesian charcuterie spread and Mediterranean mezza platter. But, what is the difference between a cheese board and a charcuterie spread?
A cheese board has a selection of cheeses and foods that pair well. A charcuterie board has a selection of meats and foods that pair well.
These days, charcuterie doesn’t just mean meat and there are lots of alternatives that aren’t exactly new. Those include hot cocoa and pumpkin platters, breakfast board, or even barkuterie boards to spoil your beloved pets.
And this patriotic red, white, and blue cheese board is perfect to celebrate July 4th or Memorial day.

The ingredients
The secret to making a good cheese board is always to use fresh fruits and produce. Here’s a list of ingredients to make the July 4th cheese board. However, you can always mix and match the fruits or ingredients.
- Strawberries or raspberries
- Blueberries
- White cheddar cheese. You can also use mozzarella cheese, swiss, Colby, etc
How to make a patriotic red white, and blue cheese board
- After washing your fruit thoroughly and giving it time to dry, pull or slice the stems off your strawberries
- Place your blueberries in a small white bowl and place it in the corner as a placeholder for the square section
- Line the strawberries up in a double line, at the top of the platter, skip an equal amount of space and place another double line of strawberries. Skip another equal amount of space and at the very bottom of the platter place one final line of strawberries
- Be sure to keep your lines straight and be sure to line up the starting points of the first two double strawberry lines so the blueberry portion is even
- Slice your cheese blocks into about ¼-inch slices. Line two slices up side by side in the two open lines. Add another stack on top of each cheese line
- You can either leave your blueberries in the bowl or pour them into the remaining, open space. Enjoy!
Kitchen tips to make a patriotic cheese board
You can also use mozzarella cheese, swiss, Colby, etc. in place of the white cheddar. The 8-ounce blocks I used were the perfect, sliceable size to fit the platter, which involved less work. If you are using different cheese, you’ll want to measure your space and fit your slices accordingly.
You can use other items in place of the cheese if you prefer. White chocolate-covered pretzels, marshmallows, white chocolate-covered almonds, etc. would all make great choices.
Kitchen tools
You won’t need lots of tools to make a cheese board; however, you will need a large board or platter to display your food. I like a simple charcuterie board or if you prefer something nicer, go with an extra-large cheese board and knife set.
How to store fresh strawberries
I’ve read and heard so many tips about keeping strawberries fresh in the fridge. However, this is the method I’ve been using. Place strawberries in a glass jar container without a lid and place it in the coldest part of the refrigerator.
