This Blood Orange Saketini is light, citrusy, and surprisingly refreshing. Made with fresh blood orange juice and sake, it’s an elegant cocktail that’s easy enough for a quiet evening at home but beautiful enough for Valentine’s Day, dinner parties, or any celebration that calls for something a little special.

Every winter, I start looking for blood oranges.
Not because they’re dramatically sweeter than regular oranges, but because they feel like a little celebration of citrus season. Their deep ruby color somehow makes even the simplest drink look like it came from a fancy cocktail bar.
That’s exactly how this Blood Orange Saketini came to life.
I wanted something elegant without requiring a dozen different bottles or complicated techniques. Sake already has such a clean, delicate flavor that it doesn’t need much help. Add freshly squeezed blood orange juice, shake everything until icy cold, and suddenly you have a cocktail that looks impressive while being surprisingly easy to make.
Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day, hosting a dinner party, or simply winding down after a long week, this is one of those drinks that feels a little more special than the effort it takes.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
One of the things I love most about this cocktail is its simplicity. Fresh blood oranges provide both the beautiful color and natural sweetness, while sake keeps the drink light and smooth without overpowering the citrus. It comes together in just a few minutes, making it perfect when you want an elegant cocktail without stocking an entire home bar.
What Is a Saketini?
Despite the name, a Saketini isn’t simply a martini made with sake.
Instead, it’s a cocktail inspired by the classic martini that replaces some or all of the traditional spirits with sake. The result is lighter, smoother, and often easier to enjoy, especially for anyone who prefers refreshing cocktails over stronger drinks.
Adding blood orange gives this version a seasonal twist that’s both vibrant and beautifully balanced.
Choosing the Best Sake
A dry sake works especially well here because it allows the citrus to remain the star of the drink without becoming overly sweet.
If you’re new to sake, don’t overthink it. Choose one that’s meant to be served chilled and enjoy its clean, delicate flavor alongside the fresh juice.

Optional Tajín Rim
If you enjoy a little contrast in your cocktails, try rimming the glass with a mixture of Tajín and flaky sea salt before pouring the drink.
The citrusy chili seasoning complements the sweetness of the blood orange beautifully while adding just enough savory flavor to make every sip a little more interesting.
It’s completely optional. But highly recommended.
Serving Ideas
This cocktail pairs wonderfully with sushi, poke bowls, light seafood dishes, or a simple cheese board. It’s also an easy signature drink for Valentine’s Day dinners, bridal showers, or spring brunches when blood oranges are still in season.
A thin blood orange slice, edible flower, or even a small rose petal makes an elegant garnish.

Helpful Tips
Freshly squeezed blood orange juice will always give the brightest flavor and most vibrant color. Chill both the sake and the serving glasses ahead of time so the cocktail stays crisp without becoming watered down. If you’re using the Tajín rim, coat only half of the glass so guests can choose whether they’d like each sip with or without the seasoning.
FAQs
Can I use regular oranges?
Yes, although blood oranges provide the signature ruby color and a slightly more complex citrus flavor.
What type of sake works best?
Dry sake is my favorite because it balances the sweetness of the fruit without overpowering it.
Can I make this ahead of time?
You can mix the ingredients ahead and refrigerate them, but wait to shake with ice until just before serving.
Is this cocktail very sweet?
Not at all. The fresh citrus keeps it bright and refreshing, while the sake adds a clean finish.

A Little Catch-Up Before You Go
Some cocktails are designed to impress with long ingredient lists and complicated techniques. This isn’t one of them.
The beauty of this Blood Orange Saketini is that it lets a handful of good ingredients do exactly what they’re meant to do. Fresh citrus brings brightness, sake adds elegance, and together they create a drink that’s just as comfortable at a quiet dinner for two as it is at a celebration with friends.
Sometimes that’s all a good cocktail really needs. Thanks for catching up with me.

I’ve never tasted a drink made with sake! I bet this would be wonderful! I love anything “blood orange” flavored! Lovely photos, too!
Thanks, Christina. Hope you get a chance to make this 🙂
I’ve never thought about using sake in a martini…what a fun creation, Linda! I’m with you, though. We don’t do much for Valentine’s Day around here. We usually prefer to stay in rather than go out since the food is usually just overpriced on the holiday anyways. I’m thinking we need to have a day-after-Valentine’s-Day saketini now though! 🙂
Thanks, David. The after-Valentine’s-Day saketini is a great idea!
This looks fantastic! My daughter will like this, she loves Sake.
Thank you! I hope you and your daughter can enjoy this drink as much as I did with my husband.
