Create a little taste of aloha in your kitchen! These Tuna Poke Mochi Waffles make a fun appetizer – delicious, easy, super nutritious and so refreshing.
I love bite-sized snacks like Nutella mochi or Dutch Sausage Roll, and I could live off them. So izakaya or tapas restaurants are my most favorite places to go because they give me a chance to try a different kinds of dishes rather than having one big entree for myself. And this tuna poke mochi waffle recipe is perfect if you like appetizers too.
My friends and I have been talking about Hawaii a lot and how we’re excited about poke. In my case, I don’t mind going there over the weekend just for a bowl of poke. Yep, that’s how serious I am about it. Craving more, I decided to make my own in a mini form. Poke doesn’t take long to make. The only thing, though, you need to get fresh ingredients to get the best flavor.
I am adding waffles as the base, and I use mochi instead of regular waffles. Mochi waffles or moffles are quite famous in Japan. The making of a moffle is similar to panini, where mochi is compressed in a waffle maker (instead of a panini maker). The fun part of making moffles is a moffle brunch buffet. You can have mochi paired with sweet or savory items. Sweet, meaning dipping in melted chocolate, treating them as waffles, or even sandwiching them with ice cream.
So, today’s recipe is all about savory. You can grab your mochi from any Asian market or Whole Foods and then slice them into squares. Spray your waffle maker with non-baking spray and start pressing. So, tuna poke mochi waffles. How fun is that?
Tuna Poke Mochi Waffles
Ingredients
- Hard mochi squares cut in half to make it thinner
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons mirin
- ¾ pound highest-quality fresh tuna cut into ½-inch pieces
- 1 jalapeño thinly sliced
- 1 scallion thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon wasabi paste
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger paste or grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
- ½ teaspoon sesame seeds
- 1 avocado thinly sliced
Instructions
- Spray the griddles with a little Pam or other oil first. Place Mochi square on heated waffle iron. Press down firmly but slowly and cook for 5-7 minutes or until crispy.
- In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce and mirin; and brush over mochi waffles.
- In a separate bowl, combine tuna, jalapeno, scallion, soy sauce, wasabi paste, ginger, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. Mix well.
- Add avocado on top of mochi waffles and spoon poke over waffles.
