Japanese fruit sandwich (fruit sando) makes the best snack or dessert to satisfy your sweet cravings. It’s creamy, perfectly sweet with refreshing fruit flavor, and only requires four ingredients to make. Plus, you won’t need a plate and fork to enjoy this creamy sandwich.
Today is all about sandwiches, but not a savory kind. Instead, it is creamy, sweet, and can be ready within minutes without all the hassle. If you’re wondering if a fruit sandwich is good? The answer is abso-freaking-lutely!
What is a Japanese fruit sandwich
Sando is short for a sandwich in Japan; hence, fruit sando simply means a fruit sandwich. Japanese fruit sandwich or fruit sando is a Japanese sandwich with fresh seasonal fruits and lightly sweetened whipped cream.
The ingredients
Making fruit sando is super easy and uses all-ready-made ingredients. You will need:
- Bread. I recommend using Japanese milk bread
- Heavy cream for the filling
- Sugar to add sweetnedd to the cream
- Fresh fruits, such as strawberry, oranges, kiwi, all kinds of berries
- Optional: mascarpone cheese
How to make fruit sandwiches
- Place mascarpone cheese in a medium bowl. Make it smooth with a spatula.
- In another bowl, combine heavy cream and sugar, and whip until it forms soft peak
- Combine the whipped cream with mascarpone cheese and fold gently with a spatula
- Spread the cream inside the milk bread and fill with sliced fruits
Bread type for fruit sando
Fruit sando usually uses shokupan (a traditional milk bread in Japan); however, you can also use regular white bread and trim the crust.
Best fruits to add
Fresh fruit is the best option. Use firm, not mushy fruits to hold their shape. I suggest adding strawberries, oranges, kiwis, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, mangoes, Asian pear, or peaches.
Storing
This fruit sandwich can be stored in the fridge for up to two days.
Can I make this in advance?
Yes! You can make the cream and store it in the fridge the day before and assemble the sandwich when you’re ready to enjoy it.
Best way to enjoy a fruit sandwich
I enjoy this creamy sandwich with sangria, cold brew, or strawberry lychee soda.
