Why you need to try chocolate lava cake
- It is super easy to make and only requires six ingredients
- Chocolate overflow! And it’s completely okay to lick your spoon, too. I won’t judge!
- Because we all need chocolate
Ingredients to make hazelnut lava cake
Making lava cake is easy and quick; hence, make sure to gather all the ingredients. You only need six main ingredients, and here’s the list:
- Dark chocolate powder. I highly recommend using dark chocolate with a 70% bitterness level or bittersweet
- Sweet butter to make it creamy
- Eggs. I use large eggs in this recipe and bring them to room temperature
- Sugar and use granulated sugar
- Flour. Always use all-purpose flour or cake mix
- Hazelnut liquor, but you can substitute this with different flavors
How to make molten lava cakes
This has to be one of the easiest dessert recipes on my site. All you do is mix all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl until it’s creamy.
- Preheat oven to 400F. Meanwhile, place the chocolate and butter in a saucepan over low heat and stir until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
- Generously butter four 125 ml (1/2 cup) capacity ramekins and set aside.
- Whisk the eggs and sugar in a bowl until well combined and form ribbons, about 6 minutes.
- Add the chocolate mixture and hazelnut liquor. Whisk again at low speed.
- Add the flour and fold until well combined.
- Spoon the mixture into the ramekins until it fills below the top line.
- Place molds/containers on a baking tray and bake for 10-12 minutes (depending on the oven’s power) OR until the cake springs back when you touch the surface with your finger. Unmould immediately onto serving plates and eat straight away in order to get the “lava effect.” You can also serve this lava cake with vanilla ice cream. Yum!
What’s the difference between cacao and cocoa powder
Apparently, they’re similar but also not the same. We’re all familiar with cocoa powder, and I’ve been using it for beer tiramisu and red velvet bundt cake. It gives good chocolate flavor and texture. However, cacao powder has a more intense, bitter taste and higher nutritional content. Hence, go for cacao powder when possible.
Storing lava cake
Although I don’t suggest it, you can store lava cake in the fridge for up to 5 days. When you’re ready to enjoy, reheat in the microwave or oven and set to warm.
How to serve
This chocolate hazelnut lava cake recipe is perfect for special occasions, or anytime you want a delicious dessert. Here are some great serving suggestions:
- With vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream if you want extra chocolates
- A dollop of whipped cream and shaved chocolates for garnish
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar and garnish with fresh berries
- Enjoy this with a glass of cold milk
Chocolate lava cake – KETO VERSION
By substituting the ingredients, you can easily turn this chocolate lava cake into a keto or healthier version.
- Cocoa powder to replace dark chocolate powder, or keep it as is
- Powdered sweetener to replace sugar
- Almond flour to replace flour
- Unsalted butter to replace sweet butter
- Vanilla extract to replace hazelnut liquor
There is no doubt that most of the people love lava cakes. They are easy to prepare and ready in just a few minutes. If you need a dessert recipe to treat yourself, this chocolate hazelnut lava cake is the answer!

I usually make lava cakes for Christmas or Christmas Eve. Since there is only hazelnut liqueur involved and no nuts (hubby wouldn’t like!), I think I found this year’s recipe. Your lava cakes look divine, Linda!!
